Δεκάδες κάτοικοι από τα γειτονικά χωριά της Ιερισσού και της Ουρανούπολης, καθώς και διαδηλωτές που έφτασαν με λεωφορεία και αυτοκίνητα από τη Θεσσαλονίκη, πλησίασαν το δάσος στις Σκουριές, όπου η Hellenic Gold, θυγατρική της καναδικής εταιρείας Eldorado Gold, έχει αρχίσει μεταλλευτική δραστηριότητα ενάντια στην οποία η ντόπιοι έχουν κάνει έφεση. Οι κάτοικοι του χωριού Μεγάλη Παναγία έχουν χωριστεί σε δύο μεριές, σε αυτούς που αντιδρούν στην λειτουργία των χρυσορυχείων λόγω της τεράστιας οικολογικής καταστροφής και σε αυτούς που είναι υπέρ επειδή μελλοντικά θα δουλεύουν στα ορυχεία.
